On Measurement and Meaning
A reflection on what we count, and what counting can hide.
We measure what is easy to count and then quietly forget what we left out.
That is not a flaw of measurement; it is a flaw of forgetting. Every metric is a choice, and every choice has a shadow — the thing that mattered but did not fit neatly into a number.
The mature use of measurement is to hold it alongside the things that resist it: meaning, attention, the felt quality of a life. Not to abandon rigour, but to remember that rigour is a servant and not a master.
Count carefully. Then look up.
