Write the Cost Beside the Goal

An ambition becomes clearer when its demands are made visible.

R Richard Nkwenti 1 min read

There is a goal you can name easily. Try naming what pursuing it will require from the rest of your life: time, money, concentration, help, or a season of greater uncertainty.

Put those demands beside the goal rather than in the small print beneath it. Which costs can you accept? Which will fall on people who have not yet been asked? Which would make the achievement difficult to live with?

A candid inventory need not weaken your ambition. It gives you a chance to build an effort whose success you can stand behind.
