The Long Apprenticeship of Anything

There is a stretch in every worthwhile craft that looks, from the outside, like nothing is happening. You are studying, failing, copying badly, making things no one sees. The résumé is thin.

This is the season of real education, because it is the last time you will be willing to be a beginner. No one grants it; no one certifies it. You simply keep showing up until the work begins to trust you.

The mistake is to treat the apprenticeship as an obstacle between you and the real thing. It is the real thing, wearing ordinary clothes.
