The Person Beyond the Screen

Attention has consequences for the person waiting to be heard.

R Richard Nkwenti 1 min read

During a conversation, a glance at the screen can carry a message you never intended to send. The other person must decide whether to continue, repeat themselves, or abandon the more difficult part of what they hoped to say.

Some interruptions are necessary. Name them plainly when they occur. When you can offer a few uninterrupted minutes, say so and keep that agreement.

The quality of your attention helps determine how much another person can safely bring into a room with you.
