The Long Apprenticeship

On the years that do not appear in the résumé.

An older craftsperson demonstrates carving technique to a younger apprentice at a wooden workbench.

There is a stretch in every worthwhile life that looks, from the outside, like nothing is happening.

You are reading, failing, copying the masters badly, making things no one sees. The résumé is thin. The confidence is thinner. And yet this is the period where the real education happens, because it is the only period where you are still willing to be a beginner.

I have come to think of it as an apprenticeship you serve to the work itself. No one grants it. No one certifies it. You simply keep showing up long enough that the work begins to trust you.

The mistake is to treat this season as an obstacle between you and the real thing. It is not between you and the real thing. It *is* the real thing, wearing the clothes of ordinariness.

Stay in it longer than feels reasonable. That is where the depth is made.
