Discipline is often sold as self-punishment: early rises, cold showers, relentless output. That version exhausts people quickly, because it treats the body as an enemy to be conquered.

The older and truer idea is that discipline is a structure that makes freedom possible. It removes the daily negotiation about whether to begin. It protects the thing you care about from the moods that would otherwise decide for you.
