A Dialogue Between Ambition and Enough
Two necessary voices argue over the size of a life and discover that neither can be trusted alone.
AMBITION: We are late.
ENOUGH: For what?
AMBITION: For the life we said we would build. Others have crossed the distance while we were resting.
ENOUGH: You call every pause a betrayal.
AMBITION: And you call every unfinished thing a boundary.
ENOUGH: Some boundaries prevent the builder from becoming material.
AMBITION: Easy wisdom from a voice that has never made anything difficult.
ENOUGH: I was present when you finished the first difficult thing. You did not hear me because applause had just entered.
AMBITION: Applause is evidence that the work reached someone.
ENOUGH: Sometimes. It is also evidence that a room made noise.
AMBITION: Without me, talent sleeps.
ENOUGH: Without me, talent never knows when to come home.
AMBITION: Home can become an excuse.
ENOUGH: So can destiny.
AMBITION: What do you want me to do—abandon scale, refuse opportunity, apologize for wanting more?
ENOUGH: I want you to answer one question before each expansion: more of what?
AMBITION: More reach. More resources. More capacity.
ENOUGH: And what becomes less?
AMBITION: Time, perhaps. Ease. Privacy.
ENOUGH: Sleep? Friendship? The ability to be corrected by someone without a title?
AMBITION: You make every cost sound fatal.
ENOUGH: You make every cost sound temporary.
AMBITION: Then where is the line?
ENOUGH: It moves. That is why we must keep speaking.
AMBITION: I do not trust you. You would stop too early.
ENOUGH: I do not trust you. You would stop only when nothing remained to carry the victory.
AMBITION: Perhaps neither of us should rule.
ENOUGH: Perhaps the life should.
AMBITION: What does the life ask today?
ENOUGH: Build the next room.
AMBITION: And after?
ENOUGH: Enter it before deciding the house is too small.
